Palin had a lot to say last night, but how much of it was true, and how much was a lie?
Thankfully the Associated Press keeps tabs on such a thing. Here are some bits I paraphrased from this article:
PALIN: I protected taxpayers from wasteful spending, and said no to the bridge to nowhere.
FACT: As mayor of that tiny town with less than 9,000 people in it, she was responsible for $27m in earmarks. She has requested $750m as governor; more per capita than any other state.
As for the bridge to nowhere, she only rejected the concept of the $398m bridge to a village with 50 people in it, after the idea became ridiculed on national TV. Prior to that she was for it.
PALIN: Obama has written two books, but not written any major legislation.
FACT: Not true. He has been involved in numerous major bills both at state and national level.
PALIN: Obama plans to raise taxes. (Frankly, someone needs to so we can pay off all the debt Bush has run up)
FACT: A recent study showed that Obama would raise middle class tax by about 5% by 2012, and McCain would raise similar tax by 3% in the same period.
However Obama would increase tax on people and small businesses that make more than $250,000 per year. But he also has plans to give over $80Bn in tax breaks to the poor and needy.
McCAIN: Palin is responsible for 20% of the nation's energy (Alaskan Oil). And runs the largest state in the country.
FACT: She is not really responsible for the oil at all. Just like Bush wasn't responsible for Texan oil when he was governor of Texas. And while Alaska may be physically big, by population it is the 47th largest state.
McCAIN: She's commander of the Alaskan National Guard.
FACT: Not really. There's only about 4,200 of them in Alaska and if they are ever to be deployed, they report to the Defense Department, not her.
HUCKABEE: She got more votes running for Mayor than Joe Biden got running for President of the United States.
FACT: Palin got 616 votes to become mayor. When she ran for re-election she got 909 votes.
Biden got 76,165 votes before dropping out of the race.
ROMNEY: We need change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington.
FACT: George W. Bush, a conservative Republican, has been in charge of Washington since 2000. Congress only changed to a slight Democratic edge in January 2007. And much of their efforts have been vetoed and blocked by Republicans and the President.
So thanks for all the lies. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. In fact, I'm sold: let's vote old man McCain and his Hockey Mom VP!

Thanks ZCT. This was a good read. Unfortunately the republicunts won't take any time to read any of the facts which is exactly what the GOP is counting on.
Thanks.
Indeed, why would anyone who thinks Bush did a good job bog themselves down with 'facts' or 'reality?'
You may have noticed that the link that you posted is VERY carefully worded!
For starters, the bridge to no where she did ORIGINALLY support the idea but changed her mind after reviewing it and wanted it extended AND to be paid for BY Alaskans [missing from your link]
Obama PARTICIPATED in numerous legislative bills... NOT CREATED as Palin stated and Obama himself has stated in the past
As for votes for mayor, she actually got just a hair over a thousand... more than Bidens presidential run
... the list goes on... Nice FUD though... Guess she's got you scared as well ;-)
Um... scared of what? This wasn't even an election between the two parties, Obama beat Hillary, so he won. Period.
Republicans are morons and don't even know when the race is completely lost.
I just hope they don't rig this election too. ~.~
Aah another typical attack from republicans: "Guess she's got you scared." This is the response to someone's using his intellect to call into question the veracity of the claims of yet another group of lying republican politicians? Why not say "Ha ha, she scared you into using your brain!" Palin didn't have to use hers to come up any of the claims in her speech.
What prompts me to call this attack "typical" is that it's an unfounded accusation. There's no reason to think ZCT is scared of anything, least of all this glorified former beauty pageant runner up, yet the mindset of the republican seems to be accuse someone of something random when they make him uncomfortable. Look at any republican campaign ad from the past decade. It's celebration of being a mindless bully.
To the anonymous poster, let me respond to your comments…
“For starters, the bridge to no where she did ORIGINALLY support the idea but changed her mind after reviewing it and wanted it extended AND to be paid for BY Alaskans [missing from your link]”
- So she originally supported the idea of spending over $300m on a bridge, before she had reviewed the facts? How can you support an idea that expensive without FIRST reviewing the FACTS?
“Obama PARTICIPATED in numerous legislative bills... NOT CREATED as Palin stated and Obama himself has stated in the past”
- So what? Attacking him for not personally producing a bill by himself is a generally weak argument. Many people who do so do it for an ego trip anyway, or to get their own way. Perhaps Obama felt he could get more done collaborating on bills. In any case, coming from a woman like Palin, it is a laughable argument anyway.
“As for votes for mayor, she actually got just a hair over a thousand... more than Bidens presidential run”
- You can check the facts for yourself here:
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/694/
Complete with accurate sources.
When she was voted in as mayor of Wasilla in 1996 she got 651 votes. The second time around she got 909 votes.
No matter what figure you care to go by Joe Biden polled more votes than both of those figures combined. In Obama and Hillary’s home state primaries he received over 8,000 votes. More than the entire population of Wasilla. Trying to draw a comparison is frankly, silly.
“Guess she's got you scared as well ;-)”
- The fact that a woman like this has even a small chance at being President of the United States should be a huge concern for any rational intelligent American resident.
Bush came to office with limited experience and limited intelligence, playing the good ole boy card, clearing brush on his ranch etc. And just look at the damage he did. This woman is markedly less experienced, and seemingly just as stupid (although to be fair she can at least speak English).
So even if she has only a 10% chance of being VP, I am certainly deeply concerned.
But all debating aside, let me ask you (and any other Palin supporter) this very important question. Of every eligible Republican in the country, can you honestly tell me that Palin is without any doubt in your mind the best possible choice for Vice President?
